Back Alley Grass Fires Deemed Suspicious
Two grass fires were put out by quick thinking of local residents in the area of 50th Avenue and 44 Street in Athabasca.

Fire Chief Travis Shalapay says they were called out to the fires on May 12, around 5:40 PM.

However, by the time crews got to the scene, the fires had been put out.

"Preliminary investigation shows that these fires were incendiary in origin meaning they were the result of a human act or omission," Shalapay said, in an email.

"The fires are being treated as suspicious and the investigation has been turned over to the Athabasca RCMP."

He's urging people with information to contact the RCMP.
